Be Good on Your Feet Before You Hit Record

Rising Talent — Be Good on Your Feet Before You Hit Record

You want to be good on your feet.

That is the first thing I say when someone is about to make interactive or short-form video and they are a little scared. You want experience talking to the camera. You want to come up with ideas and leverage them quickly. Practice matters.

Dennis makes conversation easy on a shoot — he carries a lot of it — but for me personally, the skill is practical experience. Practicing a lot. Being good on your feet. Being able to tell stories well, come up with ideas, and know what you are talking about. Know the subjects. Know the objectives. Know what you are trying to convey to the audience.

If you have that basic stuff down, you will be all good.

Clear goal. Clear stand. Then let it flow. Do not judge yourself for the exact right words. Realize you have a lot of takes you can do. Editing can clean a lot of that up. Keep going. A lot of it is overcoming the mental fear that you are not good on video, or that you have to be an influencer. This is not influencer theater. This is about growing a brand and sharing knowledge with people who already want to connect with you.

You do not have to be a pro-level videographer. You have to be willing to tell your stories and understand where you are trying to take your audience. If that is clear in your head, everything else starts to flow.

Watch the short above, then film one take today. Be good on your feet — then hit record.
